THE OPPORTUNITY

The Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) provide research and consulting to the NZ Government in forensic science (eg crime scene investigation), water quality issues, biosecurity and public health surveillance, food safety investigation, pharmaceuticals, workplace drug testing and radiation safety and emergency response
social systems.

They recently worked to equip the NZ Police Force with devices that can detect what drug (if any) is placed on top of it through the refraction of laser rays on the crystals.

These devices require verification that they work correctly, both before they are handed over to police people and on an ongoing basis. They approached me to design an application that police forces and device testers could use to verify that the device works correctly.
